While we had a lot of big names this year at SXSW in terms of music…Prince, Justin Timberlake, Depeche Mode, Green Day and Usher, to name a few, it was the smaller, emerging bands that really capture the essence of South By. Here we present our favorite band round up as well as some fun festival pics.
Autre Ne Veut – pop/soul/R&B band headed by frontman Arthur Ashin.
Youth Lagoon – Experimental Indie pop headed by frontman Trevor Powers.
Foxygen – Indie Rock band with a 70’s vibe
Jim James – Jim James, is lead singer and songwriter of My Morning Jacket and recently released his debut solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God. The album demonstrates James’ soulful songwriting, his captivating voice and showcases his talents as both a producer and engineer.
Caveman – a five-man vibe collective from NYC who released a first album in 2011.
Rhye – L.A. based Rhye is parts Danish, songwriter-producer, Robin Hannibal and parts Canadian, Mike Milosh, the voice. The band’s recent debut album, “Woman,” is an electro-soul gem that’s attracted plenty of attention for how closely Milosh’s voice resembles that of a woman. (Rich Juzwiak of Gawker, had the most apt description when he said Milosh’s singing “is ‘Crying Game’-androgynous: capable of fooling masses, but obviously male once you have confirmation that he is.”)
MØ – Hotly tipped Danish songstress MØ aka. Karen Marie Ørsted is stirring up a buzz throughout the global blogosphere these days. With no albums out and only 3 online tracks the 24-year-old MØ recently faced a bidding war, which ultimately led to signing with Sony.
