Frisco Friday: Autum Moon Festival in Chinatown

San Francisco will be celebrating its 23rd Annual Autumn Moon Festival on September 14th – 15th from 11am – 6pm. The event will be celebrated in Chinatown and is one of the best-attended annual events. There will be a grand opening ceremony and parade at 11am on Saturday. Afterwards, there will be performances put on by dancers in ornate costumes from the flying angels. Other performers include a drumming group, Jiken Daiko and Hawaiian group, Ka Ehu Kai. A special Dragon parade will occur on Saturday at 5pm. Thousands of local residents and foreign visitors attend the Moon Festival each year.

Historically, the moon festival marks a time to reflect upon the bounty of the summer harvest, the fullness of the moon, and the myth of the moon goddess, Chang O. The Moon Festival is a distinctly and authentically Asian holiday which has been linked to a “Chinese Thanksgiving”. It is among the most popular holidays in Asia, raking alongside the celebration of the lunar New Year in cultural significance.

Sikara & Co. is celebrating the Autumn Moon Festival as well and have picked some our pieces that we feel really embrace the personality of the autumn season.
