lallitara buys secondhand saris from India’s sari-pickers and transforms them into awesome products. Each is made as a one-of-a-kind piece, modeled just for you! Through this process, you are helping us support India’s vibrant sari-reuse tradition by providing sari-pickers a livable wage and helping keep the earth just a little bit greener. We know these fabrics are amazing, and we want to share that with the world.
lallitara was hatched while founder, Bijal Shah was working on slum development issues as an AIF-Clinton Fellow at Saath in Gujarat, India. In a sea of beautiful second hand sari fabric, the spark was lit. Although it was all just a nascent flicker of an idea back in 2010, the encouragement of friends and family and a lot of hard work and perseverance allows us to bring you lallitara today.
This spring, lallitara is hosting a design contest—think Project Runway meets Iron Chef. That is, you supply the creativity and design chops, and we provide the “mystery ingredient” of the sari! Sign up at SARIFIXATION.com, if you are interested, or spread the word to your crafty friends!
lallitara will be featured in this month’s Brilliant & Bright event on Thursday February 21st from 6-8pm. Sikara will also be featuring other global entrepreneurs such as Bureh Belts, Ajiri Tea, and Sikara’s founder Mousumi Shaw! They’ll let you know what’s happening in their industry and how they’re shaking things up. Join us at 250 Newbury Street for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and great conversation. Infuse your life with style. Space is very limited RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org.
P.S. Have old saris you are dying to get rid of? Drop an email to email@example.com and we’ll put them to good use!
